“SEVEN for FIVE” is a piece composed entirely in seven. The time signature is 7/4 but within the 7 quarter notes in each bar lie two implied juxtaposed 7/8 bars. The resulting rhythmic play between the two time signatures gives the piece an interesting drive and feel that is characteristic throughout the work. Within this rhythmic interplay lies the soul of the piece. The title of the piece implies a work in seven for five players.
This piece was commissioned by Paul Nájera for his trumpet students at Flower Mound High School (Texas) for the specific purpose of performance at the 2022 National Trumpet Competition in Delaware.
