“The Mardi Gras Trio” is a three movement work designed to be a light and unapologetic representation of early jazz styles originating in the southern United States. Each movement is named after the colors of Mardi Gras (a holiday celebrated primarily in the southern states and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday, also referred to as Fat Tuesday).
The movement colors are Purple (representing Justice), Green (representing Faith) and Gold (representing Power). Movement I Purple (Justice) is based around the ragtime genre. Movement II Green (Faith), is based on blues and gospel genres and Movement III Gold (Power) is based on the sounds of Dixieland. Solos are carefully crafted but the performer may choose to improvise instead. In such cases the chords are provided for a guide. The movements should be played together in sequence but can be performed as individual works if needed.
This package includes 9"x12" staple-bound Piano Score, Trumpet Part, Tuba Part and optional Drum Set Part for a total of 60 pages. The included Drum Set part is optional and not required for successful performance.
This work was commissioned by Rebecca Wilt and Mark Clodfelter.
